Park and Accomodation

GEBHARD WOODS STATE PARK, with its wealth of stately old shade trees, is located in the peaceful town of Morris, Illinois, about 65 miles southwest of the Chicago Loop. County seat of Grundy County, Morris is located at the junction of I-80 and Illinois Route 47, easily accessible by I-55 and I-80. The town is named for a commissioner of the Illinois and Michigan canal, which began operating in 1843. The town was incorporated in 1850. Reminders of Morris' history are visible on any walk or drive through the town. The park itself borders the I & M canal, and is within easy walking distance of Morris' pleasant downtown shopping district and residential areas. Slightly to the south of Gebhard Woods State Park is the site of an old Indian village of about 1,500 inhabitants. Adjoining the park to the east is the site of the brewery founded by Louis Gebhard in 1866.

Camping is available on-site, for tents only. Facilities are primitive. First come, first served. From the parking area, it's a one-third of a mile walk to the camp sites. Call Park office for information (815) 942-0796.
